Borgo La Cerbaiola
Cerbaiola is a unique and special corner of Tuscany, with the authentic atmosphere of a medieval farming village. Most of the town has been carefully redesigned and refurbished after years of abandonment when the last families, in the middle of the last century, left to pursue their dreams and hopes among others following the inexporable pull towards larger and growing cities. The approach, even if you need to take a gravel road for the final two km, is fast and easy coming from either direction – the Apennines or Florence and Siena, or alternatively from the coast along the Thyrrenian sea. The river Cecina, which snakes its way along the small valey below us, describes the limit of the province of Pisa, and on the other side lies toward Siena, the closest major historic city (about 40 km away or 40 min by car). Florence is about 70 km to the North, or 1hr by car thanks to the Siena-Florence autoroute. At an altitude of 500m, and well away from other inhabited towns, we still have the the convenience of shopping, restaurants, and services about 15-20 minutes by car. But Cerbaiola offers you a relaxing and beautiful stay in the heart of the Tuscan landscape. Our position dominates a landscape of woods, open fields, valleys and rivers, with the low and soft contours typical of this region. The village is a natural balcony over an authenic Tuscan landscape. Volterra, unchanged for centuries, appears on the horizon and reminds us of ancient and famous cultures emanating from the Etruscans, to the Romans and then through the Renaissance until today. The fortress of Sillano, over the other valley, is a XIIth century castle, reminding us of ancient quarells between the kingdoms of the Renaissance and during the centuries before. Traveling from Cerbaiola in this Tuscan landscape brings you to Florence, Siena, and other famous cities such as Volterra andSan Gimignano, all within an hour. So from here, you can easily reach a number of famous historic sites and cities. The sea, with its beaches of Punta Ala, Castiglioncello, Cecina and Bibbona, is also acessible in less than an hour by car. But the best part of your holiday with us will be appreciating the tranquility and beauty of a restored Tuscan village, complete with swimming pool, gardens, and your own full service apartment or house.
As a witness to the history of this community of 200 souls centuries ago, we are left today with a small church, a main square, a school, the bakers oven, some stables, an oil press and barns for farm animals. In this village, on a sloping hillside, you will enjoy a cultural and natural stay. In between visits to the principal historic towns of the region, you can spend your days exploring the village and the vestiges of its’ previous working and farming life. We are undergoing our own renaissance at Cerbaiola, having carefully restored the buildings and surroundings according to strict and traditional building methods.Local artisans have used original stone, terra cotta and wide beams to reconstruct an environment true to its origins, ensuring authenticity and harmony. But modern day comforts are also yours to enjoy, with central heating, sattelite TV, modern kitchens and bathrooms, dishwashers and washing machines, and comfortable and elegant furniture throughout. And the large swimming pool in the middle of our olive groves offers you a refreshing and relaxing area alongside our traditional buildings. For those of you with an adventurous bent, there is also the river Pavone a few minutes outside the village, where you can swim among the pools of clear water under the trees. If you are patient, you will also see birds, deer, porcupines, and even boar – all indigenous to this area. In this unique place, we have recreated a life forgotten centuries ago, in an atmosphere of nature and beauty - a perfect base from which to discover the real history and ambience of rural Tuscany. We welcome you and wish you many happy discoveries!
